Sandymount Beach, Stairs & Ramps

Sandymount Beach, Stairs & Ramps

THE PROMENADE'S EDGE

The Strand Promenade has 5 sets of wide steps which negotiate the difference in level between Strand Road and the Strand itself. The 5 sets of steps are set into a border which is made up of boulders, forming a breakwater. The steps are the only points at which access to the beach is possible.

Ideas include: new Amphitheatre-type seating areas at existing level change between the beach and promenade; further development will need to consider the requirements for ramped access & handrails.

The 25-inch Ordinance Survey of Ireland Map (1897-1913) shows the tram running along beach road and the outline of what would become the promenade. This was added together with the Pier and Baths which opened in July 1884.

The promenade provides a linear park on the eastern side of the sea wall allowing the public enjoyment of the waterfront.

The existing Sandymount Baths are not part of this document, although we strongly recommend an independent study to focus on the Baths, which have been part of the history of Sandymount, to unlock their latent, future potential.

Built in 1884, even in their ruined state, they are an attraction and have potential. The success of the Dun Laoghaire Baths, which have recently been transformed, are contemporary proof of a successful new sea-side facility, which re-invigorates their surrounding area.
