DART & Walking Routes Through Sandymount

The commuter rail line completed in 1834 from Dublin to Dún Laoghaire resulted in Sandymount having a hard margin to its west, with the sea to its east. This has concentrated connectivity through Sandymount to key crossing points where the DART stations are located (Lansdowne, Sandymount, Sydney Parade).

Because of the organic, sinuous formation of Sandymount, many of the routes from the DART stations across to the Sea are not axial. The result of this is that there is no visual connection from the stations to the sea. Perceptually, the connectivity and distance of the DART stations to the sea is longer than it is in reality.

The strand at Seán Moore Park can be reached in 21 minutes from Lansdowne Road DART station or 15 Minutes from Sandymount station. The Martello Tower at the end of St. John’s Road can be reached from Sydney Parade is as little as 10 minutes.

The location of Sandymount on the DART line connects it to the full perimeter of Dublin bay as well as the inland DART network. Conversely, this also connects this network to Sandymount Village and Promenade as a destination for leisure and recreation. Clarifying the connectivity of the Village and the Promenade to the DART network would enhance the broader reach of Sandymount to the wider city.
