The Green & Seafort Triangle

The Green & Seafort Triangle

THE CIVIC HEART OF SANDYMOUNT

Because of the character of the Sandymount area, which is predominantly a web of residential roads, clear signage and way-finding is essential.

Our ideas include:

To address this, new wayfinding signposts positioned at strategic locations will clearly show the shortest routes to and from public transport, Village Green to Promenade.

New story-telling signage at strategic positions will describe the history of Sandymount, the Biosphere , the writers and poets, politiciansand artists who have lived in Sandymount -W.B. Yates, James Joyce, Seamus Heaney, Pádraig Pearse, Sinead O’Connor and many, many more.

SANDYMOUNT GREEN

At the heart of Sandymount , like a STARFISH , Sandymount Green sits at the centre of five roads - Sandymount Road, Seafort Avenue , Newgrove Avenue , Gilford Road and Claremount Road. The Green itself with grass lawns, paths and mature trees is a distinctive triangular space, enclosed by metal railings with three gates. Sandymount village is known for its character and charm. At the heart of the village is The Green, which dates from the 1820’s, this space is a distinctive hub, which anchors the village at its core. This is a village with a warm atmosphere and a real sense of community.

SEAFORT TRIANGLE

The Ordinance Survey Map of 1889 shows this triangular civic space having a fountain and a pump. Through our research, the relationship between the triangle at Seafort Avenue has the distinct possibility of being more formally linked to the Village Green. These two triangles describe the main public realm of Sandymount Village. Ideas include: Re-claiming this space, creating a public amenity space with seating, trees and increased biodiversity, while at the same time retaining its parking facility.
