WHERE VILLAGE & BEACH MEET
Where Marine Drive and Beach Road meets is an important intersection, linking Sandymount Village, Irishtown Village, Seán Moore Park, the Irishtown Nature Reserve and the Great South Wall. This project would significantly enhance this junction and create a civic space where people could meet and dwell and enjoy the unique vista across the bay.
The intersection at Marine Drive and Beach Road is a nexus of overlap between pathways that link Sandymount Village, Irishtown Village, Seán Moore Park, the Irishtown Nature Reserve and the South Wall. As a result, it is intensely used and a strategic intersection. It is a significant opportunity for intervention to improve the public realm of Sandymount.

Imagined resurfacing and improved access to Sean Moore Park.
The intersection at Marine Drive and Beach Road currently includes a pedestrian crossing and step-over to the sea wall that separates the Beach/Strand Road from the beach and park. There is a potential to make a more generous, high-quality ramp and stepped access route over the sea wall from what exists while maintaining the flood defence.
Rather than ramping back down, a raised terrace at the level of the top of the wall could grade down gradually into the adjacent landscape, creating a small south-facing public space for this heavily utilised part of Sandymount.
