The Village
Newgrove Avenue & Strand Road Junction
ARRIVAL FROM SANDYMOUNT DART STATION
To define more clearly this arrival point into the village from Sandymount Avenue and Gilford Road, this project involves signage announcing Sandymount Village as well as providing seating and planting to make the junction more attractive and prioritise pedestrians.
The junction between Sandymount Avenue and Gilford Road is one of the arrival thresholds into Sandymount Village. It is a choice point for the visitor coming from Sandymount DART station, either to go towards the Village or continue along Gilford Road towards the Strand. The sinuous nature of the roads mean however, that there is no direct visual connection to either the Village or the Strand as one travells down Sandymount Avenue. It is a natural point to select for creating a point for orientation and a threshold into the Village.
Currently there is no sense of arrival. The space is dominated by the trafficked road despite the wide footpath. The proposal involves the insertion of signage announcing Sandymount Village as well as providing seating and planting to green the space and increase biodiversity. A secure level crossing point would prioritise pedestrians and mark an entry into the Village.
