CREATING A PUBLIC FACILITY
Given the limited parking facilities in and around the village, the Village Ideas Project explored the possibility of creating additional space on Sean Moore Park. SAMRA has been advised that development of such a facility would not be in line with policies to protect green spaces.
It is included here for completeness and to display the totality of the projects deliberations.
A car park cloaked in vegetation and foliage on the Beach Road side of Seán Moore park provides for visitors and those seeking longer-term parking, adding to the three existing car parks along the Strand and Beach Road.
Having a car park that is close to the Village facilitates those seeking to park for a longer period eg. those working in the Village as well as visitors going for long walks. Having this longer term provision of parking enables the possibility of making parking within the Village shorter term. This increases the number of users who can avail of village parking without the need to expand the number of spaces.
The proposed location for the parking is well situated, as a close point to the enhanced public realm, imagined at the intersection of Marine Drive and Beach Road. This parking facility can become the point of departure for a walk in Irishtown Nature Reserve or the South Wall from Sandymount.

Provision of toilet facilities as part of a project to develop a car park would provide a public convenience to locals and visitors. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic there has been a greater uptake and use of public parks. Toilet provisions in public spaces however have been in decline over the past number of decades. Reversing this trend and providing toilet facilities would encourage more enjoyment of public outdoor space.
A new public parking area along the Beach Road side of Seán Moore park in linear configuration with a band of planting would screen parking from the view of houses on the opposite side. Access and egress could be by way of openings at either end of the stretch. Detailed design and consultation will be required to progress any proposal for this idea.
