Small Moves, Big Impact

Literary Trail

In addition to Sandymount’s physical and built heritage, there is also a rich intangible cultural heritage. This includes Sandymount’s list of important writers and poets who have lived there and immortalised Sandymount in literature.

Most notably, James Joyce refers to various locations in Sandymount in Ulysses. The existing annual tradition of Joycean scholars celebrating Bloom’s Day throughout the city is something that could be facilitated more in Sandymount. This could be by way of a dedicated trail that locates the places referred to in Ulysses with signage points.

This could be broadened to a wider literature trail that integrates other important authors that have lived in Sandymount, such as W.B. Yeats and Séamus Heaney. Both are Nobel laureates, 1923 & 1995 respectively and distinguish Sandymount as a place of internationally acclaimed poets. Notable musicians such as Sinéad O’Connor and John S. Beckett (cousin of the playwright Samuel Beckett) also lived in Sandymount and contributed to its heritage of intangible culture and art.

Developing a trail would associate these important authors and musicians with Sandymount as a place and add another strand to its character as a distinct place in Dublin.
