Small Moves, Big Impace

History, Heritage & Public Art

Foregoing sections describe how Sandymount grew over time with its pattern of winding roads connecting the Sea & the Village, to the routes connecting to Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and the City. The curving nature of the roads result in it not being easy to find one’s way in Sandymount. New wayfinding signposts, positioned at strategic locations, would clearly show the shortest routes to and from public transport to the Village Green and to the Promenade.

The distance and time required to move between transport nodes and destination is shorter than imagined. Including signage with distance and times to destinations would have the effect of reducing the sense of distance in Sandymount.

The strategy is to foster a strong visual identity for Sandymount. Creating a visual identity with a distinct and memorable character sticks in peoples’ minds and would contribute to Sandymount’s sense of place, defining it clearly as one of Dublin’s urban and coastal villages. Progressing this into a developed strategy is achievable in the shorter term and would have the effect of understanding & enjoying Sandymount more clearly, without the need for large investment.
