DEFINING THE ENTRANCES TO SANDYMOUNT VILLAGE

What we have found through our research is that Sandymount Green - the heart of Sandymount Village – is embedded and slightly hidden in the matrix of residential roads within Sandymount, making it difficult to easily find the shortest route to The Green, to enjoy its restaurants, cafes, bars & shops.

Five roads lead into Sandymount Village - Sandymount Road, Seafort Avenue , Newgrove Avenue , Gilford Road and Claremount Road.

Sandymount Road with its beautiful, mature trees forms a tree-lined Avenue with a wide public space in front of St.Mary’s Star of the Sea Church. This is an ideal location to transform the existing space into a unique, place of welcome to the village, when approaching Sandymount Village from the city.

Further along Sandymount Road at the junction with Marine Drive, closer to the centre of the Village, the solid, blank walls of TESCO supermarket begin. This is a real opportunity for transformation. Ideas include: changing the surfaces of the footpaths and road surface to clearly mark the area as part of the inner core of Sandymount Village; adding bike parking, artwork, public notices and continuous benches to the existing walls of the Supermarket.

At Seafort Avenue junction, the imagined ‘threshold’ increases the widths of the footpaths on the seafront edge and widens the paths linking to the Village; new signage points to Sandymount Village; new signage features other aspects of the story of Sandymount.

Newgrove Avenue marks the entrance into Sandymount Village from Strand Road. Ideas include: signage, transforming the traffic island, new raised pedestrian crossings, new seating, new framed views of the 18th century ‘Roslyn Park,’ designed by James Gandon.

Gilford Road Transformation ideas include signage, benches, planting , raised pedestrian crossing. Gilford Road continues to become Park Avenue and together they act like a spine along the interior length of Sandymount.

Claremount Road Transformation ideas include signage, benches, planting.
